CICIG REGRETS THE PASSING OF CARDINAL QUEZADA TORUÑO

Guatemala, June 4, 2012. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) deeply regrets the passing of Monsignor Rodolfo Ignacio Quezada Toruño, Archbishop Emeritus of Archdiocese of Santiago of Guatemala, and joins in expressing its condolences to his family and the whole of the Guatemalan people.

The unfortunate passing of the Cardinal for Peace leaves a great void in the past and present of the country, because Monsignor Quezada Toruño (who was named Lifelong Conciliator) formed a key part of the Comisión Nacional de Reconciliación—Guatemala's National Reconciliation Commission—as a mediator for peace, and his thoughts and actions were always focused on improving the wellbeing of the poorest and on denouncing injustices and impunity.
