HEAD OF LITIGATION AND INVESTIGATION RESIGNS IN ORDER TO RUN FOR PARLIAMENT IN ITALY

Guatemala, January 4, 2013. After being nominated to stand for a political position in the Italian Parliament, Antonio Ingroia, Head of the Litigation and Investigation Department of CICIG, resigned on January 3 from his position at the Commission. Ingroia informed of his decision in a letter submitted to Commissioner Francisco Dall'Anese Ruiz.

In the letter, Ingroia stated: "[...] as we had discussed previously, I have been nominated to stand for a political position in Italy and I have decided to accept. Therefore, I must return [to Italy] to campaign for the Italian Parliament elections, which will be held in the last week of February 2013".

The Commissioner said that the procedure to fill the vacancy left by Ingroia at CICIG must begin—a process that will be conducted in accordance with United Nations system procedures.

Below are some links to Italian newspapers that have covered Ingroia's decision to run for Parliament in Italy.
