COMMISSION CONFIRMS COMPLAINT AGAINST JUDGE

Guatemala, April 15, 2013. Today, in follow-up to the complaints filed against judges, the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) confirmed the complaint against Judge Silvia Coralia Morales Asencio before the Third Chamber of Criminal Appeals. In the report titled "The Impunity Judges", which was released in November 2012, the judge was accused of malfeasance of office.

At the proceedings, the CICIG official offered details of Judge Morales Asencio's decision to the investigating judge, Sergio Lima. In the decision, the judge allegedly committed malfeasance of office in case C-01074-2009-00074 (Renap). Under the proceedings, the following individuals are facing charges: Edgar Leonel Florián Paredes, Calvin Augusto Illescas González, Carlos Leonardo Vides Fuentes, Milton Rafael Chinchilla Santos, Rony Estuardo García Rojas, José Mauricio Radford Hernández, Angel Rodríguez Tello and Francisco José Jiménez Irungaray.

The Commission's lawyer presented a copy of the decision to the investigating judge and requested that the proceedings to lift the immunity of Judge Morales Asencio be declared admissible and that the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) lift immunity so that she can be investigated on the charge of malfeasance of office.

CICIG has filed 11 complaints before the SCJ against 11 judges of the Guatemalan justice system.
