Guatemala, August 5, 2009. Yesterday, August 4, 2009, two legislative proposals promoted by CICIG were passed by a broad majority of the members of Congress: The Law on Criminal Jurisdiction in High-Risk Cases and the amendment to the Law against Organized Crime, which amends the legal device of effective collaboration contained in that law. Both proposals were approved by 145 and 143 votes, respectively, out of a total of 158 Congressmen and women.
CICIG expresses its gratitude to the members of Congress, the special commissions and the political parties that supported the proposals and expedited the legislative approval process. Once again, they showed their commitment to the fight against impunity and the strengthening of the Guatemalan Justice System.
CICIG also makes a very special acknowledgement of civil society, the academic sector, the international community, the media and the men and women of Guatemala for their ongoing support of the Commission’s work and legislative proposals, which are indispensible for the successful fulfilment of the Commission’s mandate: to cooperate with the country in dismantling illegal security groups and clandestine security organizations.
