The United Nations Makes a Statement on the Election of Supreme Court Justices
This statement was made by the Secretary-General's spokesperson on the election of the Justices of Guatemala’s Supreme Court of Justice. The Secretary-General takes note of the concerns expressed by the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Justices and Lawyers with regard to the election of Supreme Court Justices in Guatemala. This issue is of crucial importance in the fight against impunity in the country. The Secretary-General trusts that the Guatemalan Congress will ensure that the Judges designated to occupy posts in the country’s high courts are competent, independent and possess unquestionable integrity. New York, October 5, 2009.

From Geneva, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Gabriela Carina Knaul de Albuquerque e Silva, stated in a press release, "The recent election of Judges for the Supreme Court of Justice of Guatemala ignored the principles of transparency, objectivity and suitability that are crucial in this type of process".

The United Nations system in Guatemala issued a press release on the election of Supreme Court Justices.
