Guatemalan society and international community united in their support for CICIG

Guatemala, March 8, 2011. Representatives of Guatemalan organizations and the diplomatic corps in the country expressed their support for the work of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) and Commissioner Francisco Dall'Anese Ruiz.

The various expressions of solidarity of social groups and Ambassadors are below.

Rigoberta Menchú
Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1992

"We are thankful to CICIG and the international community for the support provided in the fight against impunity. Therefore, we support the actions being undertaken by the Commissioner in combating this scourge."

Mario Minera
Centro de Acción Legal para los Derechos Humanos

"The presence of CICIG is important as it seeks to dismantle the illegal security structures that generate impunity and that have Guatemalan society on its knees."

Carmen Rosa De León
Instituto de Enseñanza para el Desarrollo Sostenible

"Social organizations are united in our support for the Commissioner, because we, as Guatemalans, must tackle impunity using all available tools, such as CICIG. We call upon all sectors of the country to constructively and responsibly support its mandate."

Alberto Brunori
Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Guatemala

"The presence of CICIG is crucial in eradicating impunity and supporting the strengthening of justice institutions in the country. The United Nations Secretary-General has extended the mandate of the Commission to bolster the transition towards the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) upon the culmination of the CICIG mandate."

Ana María de Klein
Madres Angustiadas

"As Guatemalans we know that with the support of CICIG light will be shed on cases our institutions have failed to solve. Therefore, all sectors of the country must unite in this fight and avoid writing off the efforts of the Commission to dismantle illegal security groups and to assist in strengthening justice institutions."
Sandino Asturias
Centro de Estudios de Guatemala

"It is key that the Commission's work continues, because it is working on paradigmatic cases, which the national justice system would be unable to resolve, as well as seeking to dismantle parallel structures. Furthermore, CICIG is proposing legal reforms that would facilitate the fight against impunity, as well as transferring skills to justice institutions."

Marco Antonio Canteo
Instituto de Estudios Comparados en Ciencias Penales

"Following the extension of the CICIG mandate by the United Nations Secretary-General, we also consider it important to reaffirm our support for the work of the Commissioner, as the head of the organization, to eradicate impunity in our country."

Norma Cruz
Fundación Sobrevivientes

"CICIG has cooperated in bringing historically untouchable sectors of Guatemalan society to justice. Therefore, we believe it to be key that the Commission remains in the country in order to further cooperate with Guatemalan society in eradicating impunity."

Eleonora Muralles
Familiares y Amigos contra la Delincuencia y el Secuestro

"CICIG is an indispensable institution in tackling parallel groups threatening Guatemala, and the justice institutions have found it difficult to dismantle such groups. Therefore, we fully support its work and Commissioner Dall'Anese."

Iduvina Hernández
Seguridad en Democracia

"The Commission is a key instrument in fighting impunity, because—through its efforts to investigate, identify and dismantle illegal security groups—it answers the cry of the Guatemalan society to fully restore the right to prompt and fair justice."

Nery Rodenas
Oficina de Derechos Humanos del Arzobispado

"Social organizations support the continued work of the Commission, because it has demonstrated its ability to investigate emblematic cases as well as the illegal security groups operating in the country."

Claudia Samayoa
Unidad de Defensores y Defensoras de Derechos Humanos

"We strongly support CICIG, an important instrument in strengthening justice institutions and in the fight against impunity in our country."

Stephen McFarland
United States Ambassador

"The presence of CICIG is important, because Guatemala is facing security and justice problems. Therefore, we believe that the Commission has done a great job fighting impunity in conjunction with the Public Prosecutor's Office and the police, with some support from judges and civil society."
Thomas Schäfer
Ambassador of Germany

"CICIG is supporting the fight against impunity and the strengthening of the justice sector. We reaffirm our political and financial support, based on the important role the Commission is playing in Guatemala."

Carmen Díez Orejas
Ambassador of Spain

"Spain reaffirms its strong support for CICIG and the Commissioner. The Commission has proven to be a useful tool in combating impunity in Guatemala."

Michael Frühling
Ambassador of Sweden

"The work of CICIG is important to Guatemala because of the need for professional support in order to combat impunity and dismantle illegal security groups and networks."
