Guatemala, December 6, 2011. At a press conference held at the Guatemalan headquarters of the United Nations Development Programme, the signing of an amendment to increase US support for CICIG was publicly announced. The event was attended by the Attorney General of the Republic, Claudia Paz y Paz; United States Ambassador Arnold Chacón; CICIG Commissioner Francisco Dall'Anese Ruiz; and United Nations Resident Coordinator, René Mauricio Valdés.
Supporting the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, CICIG, is a key part of continuing efforts together with national bodies who, on a daily basis, face the big challenges laid down by impunity," said the United Nations Resident Coordinator. Furthermore, the US Ambassador highlighted the importance of strengthening justice institutions in Guatemala: "With the cooperation of national bodies and CICIG, many countries have joined this effort—including the United States, of course—and, therefore, we continue to support different justice and security sectors, including the key fight against impunity," declared Chacón.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Claudia Paz y Paz, spoke of the great criminal prosecution progress, which was made possible through exchanges with CICIG and their support in highly complicated cases. "The support we receive in fighting impunity is of great worth, because the challenges are enormous. Therefore, we express our thanks for the support of countries that cooperate with Guatemala, such as the United States, as demonstrated by this latest donation given to CICIG," stated Pay y Paz. Francisco Dall'Anese Ruiz, CICIG Commissioner, emphasized the importance of authorities continuing their tireless effort to stop impunity and impart justice in Guatemala.
