MEMBERS OF CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION ARRESTED
Including a National Civil Police (PNC) officer

Guatemala, April 18, 2012. Today, in the morning, the National Civil Police, accompanied by officials from the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) and CICIG, arrested two individuals who are accused of forming part of a criminal organization that operated in the departments of Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz and Guatemala City.

Through the joint investigation conducted between the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) and CICIG, it was possible to establish that the National Civil Police officer Enrique Francisco Caal Xoy was allegedly involved with a criminal organization that operated in the aforementioned departments. Mario Antonio Caal Xoy, the brother of Enrique Francisco, was also fully identified.

These two individuals are suspected of being involved in planning and conspiracy to assassinate a person. As a police officer, Caal Xoy, through his illicit acts, completely disregarded his obligation to protect the fundamental rights of people.

The arrests were made in Salamá, Baja Verapaz and in the capital, Guatemala City. The arrested individuals are accused of conspiracy to commit murder.

Arrested:

  1. ENRIQUE FRANCISCO CAAL XOY, National Civil Police officer, Eminent Persons Protection Unit.
  2. MARIO ANTONIO CAAL XOY, civilian and brother of Enrique.
