Former Minister of the Interior sentenced to three years in prison

Guatemala, 13 June 2014. The Eighth Trial Court sentenced former Minister of the Interior, Raúl Antonio Velásquez Ramos, to three commutable years in prison for noncompliance of duties, because he failed to verify compliance with the Agreement of Financial Administration MINGOB-DGSP-03-2009, which was entered into between the Ministry of the Interior and the NGO Fundtech, the company in charge of renovating the male prison Fraijanes II.

SCJ and appeals judges must be suitable

Guatemala, 12 June 2014. At an academic forum held at the Universidad Rafael Landívar (URL), Commissioner Iván Velásquez Gómez stressed that candidates for judgeships at the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) and the Court of Appeals should display suitability, capacity and honesty merits, in accordance with Article 113 of the Constitution of the Republic.

Guatemala, 9 June 2014. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala presented on 5 June 2014 a proposal to the Constitutional Court (CC), with a view contributing to selection procedures for positions of public office regulated by the Nominating Committees Act.

 
 
Justice Progress
Erwin Sperisen convicted

Guatemala, 6 June 2014. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) believes the judgement handed down today by the Geneva Criminal Court sentencing former Chief of the National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala Erwin Sperisen to life in prison to be of great importance. The Court found Sperisen guilty of murdering seven inmates in 2006, in a case known nationally and internationally as Pavón Case.

Mandate
 The United Nations and the Government of Guatemala signed the Agreement Relative to the Establishment of an International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) on 12 December 2006.
Commissioner
 Commissioner Iván Velásquez Gómez is at the helm of CICIG.
Cases
 Under Article 3(b) of the 12 December 2006 UN-Guatemala Agreement for the creation of CICIG, the Commission has the power to join a criminal proceeding as a complementary prosecutor with respect to all cases within its mandate.
