Commissioner reiterates commitment to fulfilling mandate

Guatemala, December 10, 2013. On October 1, at a joint press conference with President Otto Pérez Molina, Commissioner Iván Velásquez reaffirmed his commitment to transferring skills to justice institutions and continuing to investigate new cases with the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP), pursuant to the mandate of the Commission.

After his first protocol meeting with President Pérez Molina, the Commissioner said that CICIG was prepared to open new investigations against criminal groups that promote impunity. The President of the Republic also said that he supported the Commissioner's decision to open new cases.

The head of CICIG is currently evaluating the different cases being investigated by the Commission and the progress achieved in these cases before the courts.
