Guatemala, November 6, 2009. Today, CICIG Commissioner Carlos Castresana Fernández, in a General Hearing before the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IAHRC) of the OAS in Washington, presented a report on CICIG's two years of activity in Guatemala under the Agreement between the United Nations and the Government of the Republic of Guatemala.
CICIG considered it pertinent to present this report to the IAHRC to emphasize the great importance the creators of the Commission attach to the respect, implementation and observation of human rights. The report focuses on four essential points:
- Background of the creation of CICIG in Guatemala.
- Some of the criminal investigations and cases in which CICIG is providing support to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
- Information about the legal reform proposals made by CICIG to the Congress of the Republic.
- CICIG’s participation in the election process for Supreme and Appellate Court Judges.
CICIG submitted a written report on these four themes to the Honourable Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, for its respective transmission to the State of Guatemala, whose representatives participated in the hearing.
