November 25, 2009: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Guatemala, November 25, 2009. On December 17, 1999, through resolution 54/134, the General Assembly declared November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and invited governments and international and non-governmental organizations to organize on this day activities to raise public awareness about the problem of violence against women. Since 1981, defenders of women's rights have been observing 25 November as the day against violence. The date was chosen in commemoration of the brutal murder in 1960 of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, which was ordered by Dominican president Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). On December 20, 1993, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (A/RES/48/104).

On Tuesday, November 24, the first activity in the regional campaign “LATIN AMERICA: UNITE TO PUT AN END TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN”, was held in Guatemala.
