PRESS RELEASE 008

COMMUNIQUÉ TO PUBLIC OPINION

Guatemala, January 29, 2013. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala considers the decision made by the Guatemalan justice system to try former president José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez and his head of military intelligence, José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez, to be a clear signal to Guatemalans that nobody is above the law. The pair will be tried for allegedly committing genocide and crimes against humanity. A court of law must eventually shed light on crimes committed by any individual, whatever the class or title of the person may be.

CICIG welcomes the proceedings against these two individuals and any other person who breaches Guatemalan law.
