REPORTS ON CANDIDATES FOR CC JUDGESHIPS

Guatemala, March 2, 2011. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) presented four reports on candidates for judgeships on the Constitutional Court (CC). The reports do not evaluate, challenge, denounce or object to candidates.

In order to draft these reports, the documents presented by each candidate were analyzed as along with information obtained from the Case Management Information System of the Public Prosecutor's Office (SICOMP). In addition, representatives of civil society were interviewed and the press and electronic media outlets were consulted.

CICIG hopes that the reports contribute to achieving a transparent election procedure for CC judges and help prevent the contamination of these elections by actions of individuals or groups with interests other than upholding fundamental rights—the foundation of constitutional order.

These are the four reports:

1. INFORMATION ON CANDIDATES FOR CONSTITUTIONAL COURT JUDGESHIPS TO BE ELECTED BY THE SUPREME COURT OF JUSTICE
2. INFORMATION ON CANDIDATES FOR CONSTITUTIONAL COURT JUDGESHIPS TO BE ELECTED BY THE SUPERIOR BOARD OF THE UNIVERSIDAD DE SAN CARLOS DE GUATEMALA.
3. INFORMATION ON CANDIDATES FOR CONSTITUTIONAL COURT JUDGESHIPS TO BE ELECTED BY THE CONGRESS OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUATEMALA.
4. INFORMATION ON CANDIDATES FOR CONSTITUTIONAL COURT JUDGESHIPS TO BE ELECTED BY THE BAR ASSOCIATION OF GUATEMALA.
