Secretario General de la ONU reitera respaldo a labor del Comisionado Iván Velásquez

El Secretario General de la ONU, Antonio Guterres, a través de su vocero, Stéphane Dujarric, reiteró el día de hoy su apoyo a la labor del Comisionado Iván Velásquez Gómez al frente de la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad en Guatemala (CICIG).

Mensaje del Secretario General:
“No hay ninguna queja recibida en relación al jefe de la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad en Guatemala, el Secretario General recomienda su trabajo.

En respuesta a las preguntas sobre los reportes de que el Presidente de Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, tiene previsto solicitarle al Secretario General la remoción del Comisionado Iván Velásquez como jefe de la Comisión Internacional contra la Impunidad, (…) nunca hemos recibido ninguna queja del papel del Comisionado Velásquez del Gobierno de Guatemala o de las instituciones del sector justicia del país.

Por el contrario, la ONU celebró recientemente una reunión con donantes en la Sede con la participación del Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Guatemala, el Presidente de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, la Fiscal General y el Ministro de Gobernación. Todos elogiaron el trabajo del Comisionado Velásquez.

El Secretario General elogia sinceramente el trabajo del Comisionado Velásquez y espera continuar apoyándole en el desempeño de sus funciones al frente de la Comisión”.

NO COMPLAINT RECEIVED ABOUT HEAD OF IMPUNITY COMMISSION, SECRETARY-GENERAL COMMENDS HIS WORK. In response to questions regarding reports that the President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, is planning to ask the Secretary-General for the removal of Commissioner Ivan Velasquez as Head of the International Commission against Impunity, the Spokesman said that we have never received any complaint about the role of Commissioner Velasquez from the Government of Guatemala or from the country’s justice sector institutions.

On the contrary, the UN recently hosted a donor meeting at Headquarters with the participation of the Foreign Minister of Guatemala, the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, as well as the Minister of Interior. They all praised the Commission’s work.

The Secretary-General heartily commends the work of Commissioner Velasquez and looks forward to continuing to supporting him carry out his functions at the helm of the Commission.
